Roland Cabigas, managing director of the La Liga Policy Institute (La Liga) and a convener of Go Organic! Philippines, said the figure represents 10 percent of the country’s total 4 million hectares of land devoted to rice production alone. The target, he said, was proposed by La Liga during the first of a series of consultation with various stakeholders in the Ilocos region (region 1) organized by the Department of Agriculture (DA)—Regional Field Unit 1 at the DBM Regional Center in San Fernando, La Union last week. May 28, 2011 EDITORIAL The only reason organic food has not really taken off the shelves is the high cost and the tedious task of producing them.\ But they are expensive only because it does not make much economic sense to farmers to grow them because of the non-use of fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals that would have guaranteed minimum infestation and maximum yield. Needless to say, the use of chemical farm inputs entails big money and alters the natural nutritional balance of the soil, if not permanently poisons it altogether with tragic and irreversible results.
