Future of organic farming bright, say advocates |

July 26, 2010 LINGAYEN, Pangasinan — Farmers, traders and other stakeholders in Northern Luzon are optimistic about the future of organic agriculture following the pledge of local government units (LGUs) to support it.
Led by Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza, a stakeholders’ forum kicked off at the convention hall of the Pangasinan State University here Friday, with over 200 farmers, traders, members of the academe and LGU representatives from Regions 1, 2, 3 and the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) taking part in discussing issues confronting the organic agriculture movement. FAO sees need for doubling global food production |

July 9, 2010 The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) called on developing nations to double its budget for the agriculture sector to sufficiently provide for the needs of increasing populations.
During the “Investment Forum for Food Security in Asia and the Pacific” held last Wednesday at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Mandaluyong City, FAO director general Dr. Jacques Diouf said “food production will need to double in the developing world by 2050 in order to feed the growing population.” Read more here. Go Organic! Philippines is a group of NGOs, farmers organizations, local government units and sustainable agriculture advocates working together to promote organic farming as way of life to ensure better health, food security, balanced environment, and increased income for Filipino farmers.
Go Organic! Philippines asserts that sustainable responses are needed to food self-sufficiency problems and agriculture development challenges facing the country. It strongly advocates for the urgent need to shift to organic farming systems to combat the rising prices of commodities and farm inputs, shortage in the supply of food and rapidly deteriorating environment.

DA chief to reduce rice imports, raise subsidies |

July 5, 2010 By Marvin N. Benaning Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala says he is keen on achieving rice sufficiency within his incumbency even if it means overhauling the rice program and splurging on post-harvest facilities, irrigation and farm-to-market roads (FMRs).

Last year, La Liga along with the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM), local government units of Alaminos City, Pangasinan, Samal and Dinalupihan, Bataan, Guimba, Nueva Ecija, Tabacco, Albay, Baoo, Camarines Sur and Naujan, Mindoro Oriental other NGOs and POs implemented the Organic FIELDS Support Program (OFSP) in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and its line agency, the Bureau of Soils and Water Management.

June 23, 2010 Agriculture/Commodities Page B5  ORGANIC farming advocates are pitching for the much-needed funding to support the promotion and development of organic farming in the Philippines with the passage of Republic Act 10068 this year
Go Organic! Philippines, a consortium of nongovernment organizations (NGOs) led by La Liga Policy Institute (La Liga) and the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM), is urging the in-coming administration of President-elect Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to institutionalize such funding support to ensure the effective implementation of the law.
Also known as the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010, the law signed by President Arroyo on April seeks the development and promotion of organic farming or a chemical-free agricultural method in the country. It establishes a comprehensive organic-farming program, which includes incentives for farmers engaged in the production of agricultural crops free from harmful chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
The new law also creates a National Organic Agricultural Board (NOAB) to provide policy direction towards the promotion of organic farming in the Philippines. Read 0 Comments... >> |

June 9, 2010 TO have better food security and nurturing of farmlands, organic-farming advocates are urging President-apparent Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to use part of the P3.5-billion fund for the Ginintuang Masaganing Ani rice program to promote organic farming.
“An important program such as the promotion of organic farming, which supports sustainable agriculture through environment-friendly ways of producing food on our table, deserves a bigger share from the budget of the Department of Agriculture,” said Roland Cabigas, managing director of La Liga Policy Institute and a convenor of Go Organic!
