From the Ground Up: Developing organic communities

Sustainable agriculture technologies and organic fertilizer production technologies will be shared to at least 600 farmers in seven rice producing cities/municipalities across the country. Partnerships will be forged among local government units, non-government organizations, local farmers’ organizations, DA units and the private sector for collective initiatives promoting sustainable agriculture at the local level.

Go Organic! Philippines is a group of NGOs, farmers organizations, local government units and sustainable agriculture advocates working together to promote organic farming as way of life to ensure better health, food security, balanced environment, and increased income for Filipino farmers.

Go Organic! Philippines
asserts that sustainable responses are needed to food self-sufficiency problems and agriculture development challenges facing the country. It strongly advocates for the urgent need to shift to organic farming systems to combat the rising prices of commodities and farm inputs, shortage in the supply of food and rapidly deteriorating environment.

ORGANIC farming advocates have called on the Department of Agriculture to integrate disaster preparedness and risk reduction by funding programs that will make farming resilient to natural calamities. Lawyer Efren Moncupa, lead convenor of Go Organic! Philippines said the government should “allocate adequate fund for disaster preparedness, to reduce risk of losing billions of pesos worth of investment in the agriculture sector.” 

“Otherwise, our economy will continue to be vulnerable to natural calamities,” he added. Read more here.

ORGANIC-farming advocates on Monday called on the government to fund and implement programs on sustainable agriculture and programs that will make farming resilient to natural calamities, such as drought and flashfloods brought about by climate change.

Efren Moncupa, a lawyer and lead convenor of Go Organic! Philippines (GOP), said that aside from promoting environment-friendly food-production practices, concerned government agencies,  particularly the Department of Agriculture, should integrate disaster preparedness and risk reduction to food security, with the objective of minimizing damage to agriculture caused by extreme weather events, such as agricultural drought or flash floods. Organic farming advocates have asked the Department of Agriculture  (DA) to fund and implement programs designed to strengthen the capability of farming to sustain itself and battle drought and floods.

Government urged to ban chemical use in farming PDF Print E-mail

CONCERNED government agencies were asked last week to conduct a thorough evaluation of the chemical inputs used in farms to protect the general public from their harmful effects.

Go Organic! Philippines lead convenor Efren Moncupa issued the call in the wake of reports that some herbicides used by farmers to control weed are fatal and are often used in suicide attempts, particularly in the province of Benguet. Read more here.

The development of genetically engineered rice alone will not address the looming rice crisis in the face of the global economic crisis and impacts of climate change. Instead of developing genetically engineered rice, focus should also be given on formulation of solutions based on the real problems that beset the country’s rice economy, Oscar Zamora, a professor of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) College of Agriculture in Laguna stressed. ORGANIC farming should be given as much importance as the genetic engineering of rice to boost the country’s chances of addressing the looming rice crisis in the face of the global economic slowdown and impacts of climate change.

Oscar Zamora, a professor of the University of the Philippines College of Agriculture in Los Baños, Laguna, said focus should also be given on the formulation of solutions based on the real problems that beset the country’s rice economy rather than the development of genetically engineered rice variety which, he said, does not solely address farmers’ woes.
