Lower rice supply feared despite big importation |

by Marvyn Benaning, February 16, 2009 - The importation of 1.8 million metric tons (MMT) this year may not be able to staunch fears of a rice shortage – and consequently of price increases – since production is expected to be down due to a huge slash in the use of petroleum-based fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemical-based inputs. Nearly 1.5 MMT of rice from Vietnam and Thailand will be pumped into the domestic supply by the end of the quarter, at which time local harvests are expected to come in to prop up local inventories. The Department of Agriculture (DA) says the importation from Vietnam and Thailand is meant to close the deficit in local rice production, considering the 10 percent post-harvest losses incurred by Filipino farmers.
Jaime Tadeo, spokesman of Go Organic! Philippines, said traders are now buying palay at P16 per kilo, which translates into P32 per kilo of rice in the markets. Read more here.
