Component Objectives
The OFSP Phase 1 shall include a Research and Development component. This shall be aimed to (1) establish baseline data in the six (6) project sites, (2) provide a scientific and quantifiable data and analysis on the beneficial impacts of shifting to organic farming, and (3) identify best practices and areas for improvement/enhancement in organic farming practices. Scope and Parameters
The conduct of the R&D component shall be two-pronged. Two project sites shall be selected for full-blown R&D to be conducted by a team of agricultural experts. The other four (4) project sites shall have limited R&D intervention aimed mainly at establishing baseline data in these areas. The Provincial Team, together with local DA representatives shall conduct the R&D component in these 4 sites. The full-blown R&D shall investigate two (2) areas of inquiry, namely (1) Comparison of the Agronomic, Economic and Yield Responses of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), Balanced Fertilization, and Farmer’s Practice in two project sites; and, (2) Quantification of the Contribution to Rice Productivity of the Component Technologies of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). R&D Focus Sites
Alaminos City in Pangasinan and the municipality of Baao in Camarines Sur shall serve as the focus sites for the R&D component of OFSP Phase 1. R&D Team
An R&D team shall be constituted and comprised of agricultural experts led by Dr. Oscar Zamora of the UP Los Baños College of Agriculture. Local teams in coordination with the R&D team shall also take charge of monitoring and consolidating R&D reports from the non-focus sites for baseline establishment. The R&D component shall likewise work in close coordination with relevant DA agencies such as the BSWM, PhilRice and ATI.
